Rules tightened from 12.06.2026 — the threshold nearly doubled

Family reunification
in Ireland

From 12 June 2026, the Category A income threshold nearly doubled — from €40,000 to €75,000 cumulative over 3 years. Only one sponsor’s income counts; it cannot be combined with a spouse’s.

How the process runs

01
Checking sponsor category
Determines whether the sponsor is an Irish citizen (Category A) or a work-permit holder (Category C) — this sets the applicable requirements.
02
Checking 3-year cumulative income
Only the sponsor’s income (not combined with a spouse’s) must reach €75,000 cumulative for Category A.
03
Checking non-reliance on State support
The sponsor must not have relied mainly on State benefits for 2 years or more continuously before applying.
04
Filing the application
Through Immigration Service Delivery — documents on income, the relationship, and (for Category C) proof of housing capacity.
05
Decision and Stamp 4
On approval, close family members receive Stamp 4 status — the right to work without a separate work permit.

A good fit if

You are an Irish citizen (Category A) with a cumulative income of at least €75,000 over the last 3 years, over and above any State benefits.
You have NOT relied mainly on State support for 2 years or more continuously before applying.
You are reuniting a spouse/partner aged 18+ and children under 18 — the base and most direct case.
You hold a General Employment Permit (Category C) and can document your ability to house the family.

A poor fit if

The sponsor’s income is below €75,000 cumulative over 3 years (Category A) — count only personal income; combining with a spouse’s is not allowed.
The sponsor relied mainly on State support for 2 years or more continuously before applying — a separate condition, independent of the income figure.
You are reuniting parents — a separate, stricter category with different requirements not covered on this page.
You need certainty on processing times right now — the rules from 12.06.2026 are still new, and secondary sources on processing times disagree.

Frequent questions

Why did the threshold nearly double?

Revised non-EEA family-reunification rules took effect on 12 June 2026 — the 3-year cumulative Category A threshold rose from €40,000 to €75,000. This is already in force, not a future change.

Can I combine the sponsor’s income with a spouse’s?

No — the rules explicitly prohibit combining incomes; only one sponsor’s income counts.

What does "not relying on State support" mean?

A separate condition: the sponsor must not have relied mainly on State benefits continuously for 2 years or more before applying — checked independently of the income figure.

How does Category C differ from Category A?

Category C covers work-permit holders (e.g. General Employment Permit) — beyond income, they must additionally document their ability to house joining family members.

Who can be reunited first?

A spouse/partner aged 18+ and children under 18 — the base, most direct category. Parent reunification is governed by separate, stricter rules.

What does approval grant?

Close family members of citizens receive Stamp 4 status — the right to work in Ireland without a separate work permit.
