The fastest residence status in the whole index — 2 months

Malta
Nomad Residence Permit

The fastest status in the index — about 2 months. But it is a temporary permit capped at 4 years with NO path to permanent residence or citizenship — we say this plainly, not just in fine print.

The income threshold depends on when you apply

How the process runs

01

Up to 30 working days from payment confirmation.
04
Final decision
The agency (RMA) aims for 4–6 weeks; the actual time depends on volume and how complete the documents are.
05
Receiving the residence card
The total time from filing to card in hand is about 2 months — the fastest status in the entire index.

A good fit if

You need EU status as fast as possible — no other programme in this index offers 2 months.
You have documented remote-work income from €3,500/month and can prove it.
You are comfortable with a temporary status — up to 4 years, with a clear plan for what comes after (e.g. MPRP).
The 0% first-year tax rate and 10% after appeal to you for nomad-work income.

A poor fit if

Your goal is permanent status or citizenship: NRP does not lead to permanent residence automatically — it expires after 4 years with no further renewal.
You are not prepared to file separately for MPRP (or another programme) for long-term stay — that is a separate process with its own investment threshold.
Your income is unstable or tied to local employment in Malta rather than remote work from abroad.
You need a path to EU citizenship — NRP offers none, unlike MPRP or programmes like Portugal’s.

Who runs this programme

Your request goes to two or three firms from this list. You see exactly which ones before it is sent, and you can exclude any of them.

Frequent questions

Does NRP lead to permanent residence or citizenship?

No. It is a temporary residence permit capped at 4 years (1 year + 3 annual renewals), after which it expires with no further renewal. Long-term stay requires a separate programme — for example MPRP (see Malta’s other page in the index), which is formally unrelated to NRP.

What happens after 4 years?

The status expires. If another residence status (MPRP or otherwise) is not in place by then, you need to leave the country — there is no automatic renewal beyond 4 years.

How is the tax calculated?

0% on qualifying remote-work income in the first year, then a flat 10% after that. This applies specifically to income from "nomad" work, not to income generally.

Why did the income requirement rise?

From 1 April 2024, the threshold rose from €32,400 to €42,000 a year. The older rate is preserved only for those who had already applied by that date — it does not apply to new applications.

Can you work for a Maltese employer?

No, NRP is built for remote work for clients or an employer outside Malta — local employment does not meet the programme’s conditions.

Who can be included in the application?

Dependants — but each one adds a separate €300 administrative fee; there is no single "family" amount like MPRP has.
