No investment — remote-work income only

Portugal D8
digital nomad visa

For people working remotely for clients or an employer abroad. The favourable tax regime (IFICI, 20%) is not an automatic perk — it is a separate condition for a narrow set of professions.

Income from
€3,680/mo
Time to status
6–9 mo.
Stay requirement
183 days a year
Citizenship after
10 years

The threshold is 4 minimum wages

The 2026 threshold rose to €3,680/month (4× Portugal’s current minimum wage), up from €3,280 in 2024. On top of the income, a reserve of about €11,040 in savings is required — equivalent to the annual D7 threshold.

What the full cost consists of

Government fees are comparable to D7. The main non-obvious cost is health insurance from €14/month and, if you plan to seek the favourable tax regime, a separate legal review of whether your work qualifies.

How the process runs

01
Preparing documents
NIF, bank account, proof of remote income (contracts, client statements), health insurance.
02
Filing the visa at the consulate
The visa decision takes 60 to 90 days from filing.
03
Entry and the AIMA appointment
After entry, an appointment with AIMA is scheduled to receive the residence card.
04
Getting the residence card
Another 60–90 days after the appointment — given AIMA’s 2026 backlog, this can stretch noticeably longer.
05
Renewals
The first status runs 2 years, then renews for 3-year periods as long as the income holds.

A good fit if

You work remotely for clients or an employer outside Portugal and can document it.
Your income consistently exceeds €3,680/month and you have a reserve of about €11,040 in savings.
You are ready to actually live in the country 183+ days a year — this visa is not for a "semi-nomadic" lifestyle without a real relocation.
You work in technology, research, engineering or innovation — only these professions can realistically access the IFICI favourable tax regime.

A poor fit if

You are counting on favourable tax treatment automatically — IFICI ("NHR 2.0", flat 20%) is not for everyone, only for tech/research/engineering/innovation sectors. The old NHR is closed to new applicants since 1 January 2024.
Your income is unstable or hard to document with contracts and statements.
You need a fast result — due to AIMA’s backlog by mid-2026, the realistic timeline has grown to 6–9 months.
You do not plan to actually live in Portugal 183+ days a year — otherwise tax residency status and the visa renewal itself come into question.

Frequent questions

What happened to NHR?

The old Non-Habitual Resident regime closed to new applicants on 1 January 2024. Only transitional rules apply to those who registered before that date.

What is IFICI, and does it work for every D8 holder?

IFICI ("NHR 2.0") gives a flat 20% rate on qualifying Portuguese-source income for up to 10 years — but it is NOT automatic: eligibility is tied to working in technology, research, engineering, or innovation-driven sectors. A D8 holder in another field cannot claim it.

What happens if you spend over 183 days in Portugal?

You become a tax resident and are subject to progressive income tax on worldwide income (14–48%) — if you don’t qualify for IFICI, the tax burden can be noticeably higher than expected.

How is D8 different from the same country’s D7?

D8 is built for people who are still actively working remotely (labour income), D7 for people living on passive income (a pension, rent, dividends). The thresholds and how income is checked differ.

How much do you need to keep in the account?

Beyond the €3,680+/month income, a reserve of about €11,040 is required in the bank account — the D7 annual threshold, used here as proof of financial stability.

How many years until citizenship?

Same as Portugal’s other residence programmes — 10 years of lawful residence (7 for CPLP nationals), counted from the first residence card. Source: Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026.
