The threshold is 200% of the minimum wage

Spain’s minimum wage (SMI) rose to €1,221/month under Royal Decree 126/2026 — and the visa threshold rose with it. The surcharge per additional family member is not uniform: the first dependant costs more than each one after.

A good fit if

You work remotely for foreign clients or an employer and your income consistently exceeds €2,849/month.
The Beckham Law flat tax appeals to you — but you must file within the first 6 months of working in Spain.
A 4–12 week timeline works for you — one of the fastest in the European part of the index.
You can document the remote nature of your work — not local employment in Spain.

A poor fit if

Your income is below the current 2026 threshold (€2,849/month) — older marketing figures may be outdated.
You missed the 6-month window to apply for the Beckham Law — the benefit is not restored retroactively.
Your work is tied to a Spanish employer or local business.
You need a path to citizenship faster than standard naturalisation (10 years, 2 for fast-track nationalities).

Frequent questions

Why did the threshold rise in 2026?

Spain’s minimum wage (SMI) rose to €1,221/month under Royal Decree 126/2026 — the visa requires 200% of it, hence the rise to €2,849/month. Materials written before this decision may show an outdated, lower figure.

What is the Beckham Law and how do you get it?

A special tax regime: a flat 24% rate on Spanish-sourced income (up to €600,000/year) instead of the progressive scale up to 47%, with foreign income generally exempt. It is NOT granted automatically with the visa — you must apply within 6 months of starting work in Spain, or the right is lost.

A 1-year visa or 3-year status right away — what’s the difference?

Through a consulate you get a 1-year visa (~€90); through the Unidad de Grandes Empresas (UGE) you can get a 3-year status right away (€73.26) — the second route is not available to every applicant profile.

How long does it really take?

From first contact to visa in hand: 4–12 weeks, including the appointment (usually 2 weeks) and review (15–45 days). The TIE card after entry takes another 30–45 days.

Who can be included in the application?

A spouse and children. The first dependant’s surcharge is higher (€916/month), each subsequent one lower (€305/month) — the scale is not linear.

Do you need to live in Spain continuously?

To keep the status — over 183 days a year, which also determines tax residency.
